Predictably enough jazz activity falls off a little throughout December, and there's the inevitable smattering of easy listening 'Christmas Party' fare. But it's certainly not a bleak midwinter, and there are a good few highlights to look forward to.

Schmazz mark their 10th anniversary with a visit from 'If Destroyed Still True', one of the winners of this year's 'Promoters Choice' awards, and just the sort of young and imaginative band that have made the Schmazz programme such a vital part of the Tyneside scene for the past decade. Then, marking another anniversary (their 5th), the Sage have Andy Sheppard with a special five hour long project involving (yes, you've guessed it) five musicians.

Jazz North East continue their adventurous 'On the Outside' series with a great Anglo-Scottish-Scandinavian double bill, including the superb Norwegian drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and innovative Swedish guitarist David Stackenas.

But perhaps the most significant development in respect of the long-term future of jazz in the area is the launch on 6th December of 'Splinter', set up by JazzAction, and intended to be a weekly Sunday night gig at the Bridge Hotel featuring the cream of regional bands, with perhaps occasional guests from elsewhere. The new project sets out its stall with a flourish - an all-day session showcasing ten different bands, and all for an entrance fee of just four quid. What a bargain!
